It has been announced the motion picture Epiphany will be released on December 31 this year, initially available from iTunes. Produced by Mertiage Pictures (operated by Jane Kelly Kosek), Penny Edmiston and Koula Sossiadis Kazista, the film is a coming-of-age tale about familial relationships and redemption.
“The backdrop is the Epiphany ceremony which is celebrated around the world,” producer Koula Kazista told CM. “For Greek Orthodox Christians it marks the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. In our film, there is a lot of symbolism and parallelism revolving around the actual Epiphany celebration.”
Sisters Koula Sossiadis Kazista and Katina Sossiadis were the project’s co-writers, as well as co-directors.
“Katina and I are both Greek Orthodox Christians, and I wrote a movie that was an homage to our father and our Greek upbringing. Being Greek Orthodox is just part of who we are, because it is so much a part of the Greek American culture,” Kazista said. “Caitlin Carmichael, who plays Luka, the lead in the film, is also a devout Christian.”
With the Almighty at their backs, the cast of actors includes Alex Dimitriades as Theo, George Georgiou as Peter, Caitlin Carmichael as Luka, Scottie Thompson as Cari and Burt Young as Crab Apple. The project also features Alexi Stavrou, Isabella Menna, Hunter Wayne Pratt, Liam Tomasiello, Anna Hinsley, Seth Michaels, David Velez, David Anthony Buglione and others.
According to production literature, Epiphany presents a self-proclaimed celebration of Greek culture via a deep-dive look at one family’s journey, from their heartbreaking flight from war-torn Cyprus, to the struggles of two grown brothers trying to make a living in the dying sea sponge industry.
Told through the perspective of Luka, a young woman attempting to find her way in a world, and with people, she doesn’t always understand. Epiphany is a character-driven story of a fractured family and how they lean on their Greek heritage to find their way back to one another. Left as a baby by her father (Theo), Luka was raised by her aunt Maria and Uncle Peter in Tarpon Springs, Florida.
According to the production synopsis, the story unfolds following the death of Luka’s aunt, leaving Peter reeling from grief and resentment. Luka searches to connect with the father she hardly knows, while he is navigating a new relationship with a woman, Cari, who may have the will and heart to save them all. Just when they start to find their way back to each other, a bitter figure from their past threatens to take it all away again.
“Right now we are screening the film across the country at different theaters and churches,” Kazista explained. She conveyed the film has also won many awards.
Expect more on Epiphany in CM when it officially premieres to a wide audience the last day of this year.
