One of the Christian comics industry’s leading creative talents recently took a detour into a different realm of publishing. Evan David, known in the faith-based comics world for his Strange Tales From Eternity (Star Cross Comics), and many other groundbreaking titles, released an all-new novella paperback this year, The Life and Times of Eve.
The 100-page paperback, featuring an illustration for each chapter, is a short historical fiction that reads in-between the lines of the first five chapters of the biblical book of Genesis, and imagines what the life of Eve was like in her own words.
Evan David admits where his first professional love lies, but a novella isn’t too far off the same creative path.
“It's true, comics are my favorite form of literary media, but in the end for me, it's all about stories,” David told CM. “How can I tell entertaining stories that lead people to the truth of the Gospel? God has blessed me with many talents, one of which is writing, and so whether it’s for a comic book, an audio drama, a screenplay, or a novel, I love to write for His glory.”
Getting back to the garden and the two individuals who launched the human race has always intrigued David.
“I've always been interested in Adam and Eve and what their lives must have been like, coming into the world and discovering things as adults instead of as babies,” David explained. “Unlike a baby, they would probably remember the exact moment they were created, and the first time they tried anything new. I wanted to explore what that would look like and flesh it out a little.”
David conveyed that with his Christian writing he always tries to direct everything back to Christ and the Gospel, and The Life and Times of Eve is no exception.
“Eve thinks about sin and what she knows of God's promises,” he said. “In the New Testament it says that people of faith "looked forward" to the day of Christ through God's promises, and we explore that idea with Eve, too.”
David explained the illustrations in his book are from the Kingstone Bible, the largest graphic adaptation of the Bible ever assembled, and the cover was created by a talented artist who uses the handle Alasxe on Instagram.
“I work as a freelance animator for Kingstone Comics, the largest Christian comics publisher in the world, and the publisher of the Kingstone Bible,” David said. “And they were kind enough to allow me to use their images in my book.”
While his core audience is in the comics universe, one reviewer pretty much summed up David's novella Eve.
“One reviewer did say: ‘Evan is a talented artist and the team that brought you this book brings the story of Adam and Eve to life in a fresh new way that I haven’t seen before.’” David shared. “‘Whether you are a Christian or not, I think there’s something to be learned through the story.’"
David’s comic book projects continue at full-speed, including a new title, Outed, which poses the question, “What happens when the secret identity of a Superman-like character is revealed to the world?”
“It takes itself seriously, but there's humor and some fun jabs and throw-backs to classic big 2 [Marvel and DC] comic [makers],” David said. “I took some inspiration from All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison for the plotting, and from Bendis' Ultimate Spiderman for the writing style.”
