Al Nickerson, founder and publisher of Messianic Comics, has announced his 220-page, black-and-white, super-hero Christian graphic novel, The Sword of Eden, has been published and is available for purchase. The book is one of Nickerson’s most ambitious and influential works in his 35 years as a professional in the comic book industry.
In the forefront, before the story was written and the illustrations were crafted, the Lord was ever-present.
“I wanted to give back to God,” Nickerson told CM. “I wanted to create comics with strong Christian themes. I wanted to create comics for Christians where the readers wouldn’t feel insulted, nor compromise their Christian values. And I wanted to use such a powerful literary form to share the Gospel with readers. That’s what started me in wanting to create The Sword of Eden graphic novel.”
The Sword of Eden introduces character Rebecca Stern, whom we see at the beginning of her career as a superhero. But, what will unfold when the young heroine joins forces with Nemish-Man, Kid-Cockroach, and Professor Jack, in retrieving the Sword of Eden?
Nickerson explained the weapon was “the legendary sword used by angels to keep Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden.”
In the adventures presented in the graphic novel, the heroes battle demons, zombies, a bunch of ninjas, and a variety of super villains. Climactic points include combating mythological villains, such as Count Orlok, or the Green Knight, and the heroes’ quest to locate Noah’s Ark.
“Nowadays, there are comics dealing with biblical themes in regards to angels, demons, and God,” Nickerson pointed out, while offering a difference. “The Sword of Eden uses similar themes, but in an accurate and biblical manner.”
Nickerson’s resume in mainstream comics reads like a graphic history lesson. In his career he’s inked such series as Elfquest: Blood of Ten Chiefs, Spider-Man Mysteries, Justice League Adventures, Archie publications, and the iconic Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series. His credits as an animator and designer include Sesame Street, MTV, Nickelodeon, and Marvel Entertainment. He was the co-creator/co-producer of the award-winning cartoon short Joey and the Dinosaur: Neighborly Greetings.
The Sword of Eden has a cover price of $19.99, with an additional $4 for shipping, and can be purchased via the publisher’s PayPal account at: pictoons@frontiernet.net. It is also available via check or money order, made out to Albert Nickerson, and mailed to PO Box 31, Westtown, New York 10998. Continental United States customers only, and delivery time is about one week.
Nickerson requested that customers ordering the book include their mailing address and to let him know if they would prefer copies to be signed, and/or signed and naming a recipient.
When not filling comic book panels with imagination, Nickerson can be found at the State University of New York, where he works as a professor, teaching Sequential Art: Comics Illustration.
